With destruction of the follicle wall occurs infected hair follicle. The process may spread to the surface and lead to the formation of a larger number of fistulas or to go in depth and lead to cellulitis or inflammation of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Bacteria come to the lymph nodes that drain the affected area. Deep infection leads to systemic infection and require long-term treatment. Causes of the disease in dogs (please check flea bites in humans with pictures) are usually staphylococci (Staphylococus intermedius).

The most common areas affected are the dorsum of the nose, skin on bony protrusions, interdigital spaces and chin. Other areas of the skin may be affected especially if on these sites are present skin parasites or other disorders. In infections where the affected is fewer number of hair follicles it is harder to perceive papules of various sizes, and if a larger number of follicles is infected it can be observed in limited hairless weak spots, redness and swelling of the skin. If the lesions are large and dark-red to purple color hair follicle infection is in very serious stage and goes in depth, while small pinky-red changes mean that the process did not so much took place.

The therapy of hair follicle infection is conducted by high doses of antibiotics for 4-6 weeks, and sometimes longer. The choice of antibiotics is based on the results of susceptibility testing and sometimes cephalexin or amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is used as a therapy for infected hair follicles.. Penicillin is also used in treatment, but if the cause of infected hair follicles is staph penicillin therapy may be less successful. It is best that antibiotic therapy is conducted two weeks after the cessation of symptoms.
